Budget 2012 delivers a safer community by giving police the tools they need to tackle crime with $343 million for Police, Fire and Emergency Services – a 150% increase since 2001.
This year’s budget further increases police numbers, already the highest number of police per person in the nation. There are 434 extra police on the beat – a 46 % increase since 2002 and this will be further boosted with an extra 94 police officers funded by the Australian Government.
Funding continues with $18.24 million for the Enough is Enough Alcohol Reforms to turn problem drinkers off-tap and get them into treatment – tackling alcohol-related crime and anti-social behaviour.
Alcohol abuse causes crime. 60% of assaults in the Territory are alcohol-related.1
The Territory Government’s ‘Enough is Enough’ alcohol reforms are turning problem drinkers ‘off tap’, with more than 2000 on the Banned Drinker Register.2
New extra measures are now proposed to close the net on problem drinkers causing anti-social behaviour in our parks and streets.

Changes to Northern Territory road rules come into effect 1st February 2012 to create a safer road environment. Most of the modifications are only slight variations that clarify the details of 80 existing rules.
The key changes include: SEATBELTS: The driver is to ensure that all passengers in the car are wearing a seatbelt. If all the seatbelts are in use no extra unrestrained passengers can travel in the vehicle.

The Territory Government is tackling alcohol-related crime through a Banned Drinker Register, helping to enforce problem drinker bans Territory-wide. For the rest of us it’s drinks as usual.
Anyone buying takeaway alcohol in the Territory now needs to have their ID scanned against the Banned Drinker Register at the point of sale.
Since 1 July 2011, the Banned Drinker Register and associated ID scanners have been rolled out to more than 80 per cent of the identified takeaway liquor outlets in the NT.
The Banned Drinker Register is operational in all of the major regional centres of Darwin, Katherine, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs as well as all premises along the Stuart Highway.
The remaining liquor outlets – in very remote communities and communities with successful permit systems in the East Arnhem area – will be operational by the first half of 2012.The Banned Drinker Register and ID system are working to turn off the tap to problem drinkers across the Territory.
This is just one measure in a package of alcohol reforms to improve the health and safety of Territorians
